Horses do not have to meet start or earnings requirements to be listed. Unregistered or unraced thoroughbreds are eligible for listing as long as they have not received training in an alternative career, with the exception of ponying or outriding.

Injuries or health issues do not affect a horse’s eligibility to be listed. Connections are expected to fully disclose each horse’s known health history to CANTER representatives and buyers.

Location

Thoroughbreds may be listed if they currently reside at a track or farm located within Louisiana state lines. Horses are not required to be Louisiana-bred to list.

If your horse is located outside of an Affiliate’s service area, connections are encouraged to reach out to a representative for help with listing.

Guarantees

CANTER Louisiana does not guarantee the validity of any statement disclosed by a buyer. Sellers are strongly recommended to perform a reference check AND implement a no-kill/auction contract when rehoming any horse. Acceptable references may be a buyer’s trainer, veterinarian, farrier, or barn manager.

Please visit the Forms and Resources page for a sample contract.

Pre-Purchase Exams and Track Visits

Some buyers purchase sight-unseen, but many will want to visit their prospect. Allowing buyers to ride or handle horses is not recommended, and no person is allowed to ride a horse on racetrack property without a valid Louisiana Racing Commission license. Sellers are responsible for ensuring they are compliant with liability and track guidelines

Many buyers will wish to perform a PPE, or pre-purchase exam, on potential prospects. This is standard practice within the sport horse world and generally involves a physical examination, wellness check, and radiographs.

CANTER Louisiana is not responsible for injuries or damages that occur during horse visitations.

Prices

Most track broke horses will sell for between $1000-$4000. Market values vary depending heavily on a horse’s soundness, athletic ability, color, gender, and temperament. A sound, well mannered horse will hover towards to high end of the spectrum, while horses with injuries or vices will bring in a lower value.

It is the seller’s responsibility to appraise and negotiate their horse’s price appropriately. CANTER Louisiana representatives are familiar with market trends and a great resource for appraisal and price setting.

Agents, Marketing and other Services

CANTER Louisiana seeks to assist horsemen and women in all aspects of rehoming, including the marketing of available prospects. As we understand that running a stable is time consuming, we offer many options for sellers to choose their level of involvement in a horses sale.

Upon listing, connections will need to select a point of contact for potential buyers to inquire about their horse. This can be a horses owner, trainer, agent, or a CANTER Louisiana representative. Owners and trainers are encouraged to manage their listings, however, many horses will gather 50-100 interested parties, and selling can quickly become time consuming.

If desired, a CANTER representative can be listed as a horses point of contact. They will answer questions using information provided by the seller, and speak to potential buyers to gage interest. Agents will send serious inquiries (buyers who are ready to vet, ship, or purchase) directly to the seller. Representatives will not negotiate price, arrange vetting or shipping unless requested. Please speak to your CANTER representative with further questions regarding these services.

*All listings may be shared by CANTER representatives in secure sale pages on social media to gain interest. We may also repost on national media or reach out to former buyers. By listing with CANTER Louisiana, sellers acknowledge that their horse and information may be viewed publicly and that they are at liberty to sell the horse(s) listed.

**Agent services are offered completely free of charge as a courtesy to sellers. CANTER Louisiana will never take a commission or brokers fee for being involved in a horses sale.

Incorrect Listings

If you find that a horse is already sold, or if the contact information is incorrect, please notify the CANTER affiliate using information on the about us page.

Eligibility CANTER lists thoroughbreds who are currently in active race training, rehab, or layup within one year of their last race or recorded work.
